The Dawn of Machine Intelligence (1950s–1970s)

The formal birth of AI is widely traced back to the 1956 Dartmouth Conference, where researchers first coined the term "Artificial Intelligence." Early pioneers believed that human intelligence could be so precisely described that a machine could be made to simulate it. This era was dominated by "Symbolic AI," which relied on hard-coded rules and logic to solve algebraic word problems or play checkers. However, the initial optimism clashed with severe hardware limitations.
